Gather Round Thunderbolts

Gather Round Thunderbolts:

This is the monthly reminder to get in your support. I'm sorry I have to remind you every month, sometimes it feels like panhandling, but I know it is necessary to get the funds in. We have a Thunderbox (Our very own server box that we rent and use to run all of our own servers) bill of over $600 every three months. When you add the expenses of hosting this website, and random other junk, the total is around $225 per month. We think it's worth it when we conside the quality gaming experience we have developed here. It is my duty as CFO (Chief Financial Officer) to make sure we raise the money and pay the bills.

In our opinion, a quality gaming experience consists of the following:
  • Game Servers. Game Servers with people playing on them. Preferably full Gaming Servers.
  • A voice platform. We use TeamSpeak. It is good that you can find some of our members on our TeamSpeak server for almost all of the 24 hours of the day.
  • A website where our members can communicate and coordinate their gaming activities.
  • A quality environment, with members that have been screened for maturity and compatibility. (Ok, that kind of sounds like a dating service.)
  • A competitive outlet for our players. (We scrim frequently with other gaming groups, and we are quite competitive on five ladders and a league at TWL)
Ok, we've got our quality gaming experience going. (At least we think so) How do you fit into the picture? I'm glad you asked. Our group, the Thunderbolts, which now consist of 109 members (Give or take since we always have people on the fringes coming and going and coming back, and going again.) is broken up into four different groups for the purposes of governance. The four groups or classes within our group are Thunderbolt, Supporter, Moderator, and Headquarters. I'll break them down for you now.

Thunderbolt
We're all Thunderbolts here at the [83rd] Thunderbolt Division, but the members of the Thunderbolt user group are your basic members. They have passed the application process, and they have been deemed worthy to be invited to become members of our organization. There are no financial requirements for this group. The Thunderbolt group has B3 privileges beyond that of the basic player, and of course they have the fancy [83rd] in front of their names on the server.

Supporter
To be considered a member of the Supporter group, you must be a regular financial supporter. Supporters receive additional benefits including the following:
  • Increased B3 privileges.
  • The server private slot password. (This enables a supporter to log into the servers even when they are full.)
  • Access to discussions and polls effecting changes and adjustments to our servers.
  • Eligibility for captaincy on our TWL squads. (At league organizers discretion.)
  • Eligibility for promotion to the Moderator group.
Without the broad support of our Supporters, the big debate every month would be whether to have 18 or 20 slots on our only server because we can't afford the 24 slots anymore. We've been there in the past, and it's not much fun.

Moderator
The Moderators form the backbone of the Thunderbolt Division. A Moderator is a Supporter who has the sufficient seniority, maturity, and discipline to move to a position of authority. At this point, the Supporter is nominated to move up. When you become a Moderator, some of your privileges turn into duties. The regular monthly support is now part of that commitment.
The Moderator duties include but are not limited to:
  • Policing our servers with the ability to kick, and sometimes ban problem players.
  • Participate in the discussion and selection of potential new members.
  • Lead by example on the website, TeamSpeak and the game servers.
The Moderators are really the front line of the Thunderbolt Division, and they are a good people to turn to when you encounter a problem player on a server.

Headquarters
Also referred to as HQ and sometimes as The Council. You might not find the folks from Headquarters playing quite as much as some of the other groups. That is because they have dedicated a portion or in some cases a majority of their gaming time to improving the Thunderbolt Division. Members of Headquarters have an even higher monthly support requirement.
Headquarters duties include but are not limited to:
  • Raising money and paying bills.
  • Creating, and fine tuning game servers.
  • Creation and maintenance of website, awarding of medal ribbons etc.
  • Setting policy.
  • Competition and contests
  • Leveraging for optimal synergy. (Not really, but we do attempt to create strategies to build upon the success of our group.)
  • Basically, we do whatever we can, to create and maintain an environment conducive to a fun gaming experience for all of our members.
The seven current members of HQ have 30 years of combined experience as Thunderbolts.

Hopefully this post has been educational. I also hoping the reader understands the importance of financial support to keep this train rollin' down the tracks. To be perfectly clear, nobody is making any money and the guys from the top down are pulling their financial weight. We hope to keep a surplus of funds for the lean months that inevitably come. The financial cushion is safely stored in my beer fridge, er, PayPal account. grin.gif Just a joke! It's in the PayPal account, I swear! grin.gif

A tremendous thank you to those who support this organization.

THANK YOU!
